BBC maakt docu rond Bowie’s laatste jaren
De BBC heeft een nieuwe documentaire rond David Bowie gemaakt. ‘David Bowie: The Last Five Years’ gaat in januari 2017 de ether in. Regisseur Francis Whately maakte hiermee een vervolg op zijn ‘David Bowie: Five Years’, die in 2013 werd uitgezonden.
Ook nu weer zal er een heleboel nooit eerder vertoond materiaal en vroege audio interviews te zien en te horen zijn. De documentaire spitst zich vooral toe op de drie projecten, die Bowie in zijn laatste jaren aanpakte: de albums ‘The Next Day’ en ‘Blackstar’ en de musical ‘Lazarus’.
Francis Whately zegt zelf over de film: “I always hoped that I would make another film about Bowie as we were only able to scratch the surface in the first film, but I just didn’t expect it to be this soon. However, looking at Bowie’s extraordinary creativity during the last five years of his life has allowed me to re-examine his life’s work and move beyond the simplistic view that his career was simply predicated on change – Bowie the chameleon… ‘ch ch ch changes’ etc. Instead, I would like to show how the changes were often superficial, but the core themes in his work were entirely consistent – Alienation, Mortality and Fame.”
Daarnaast zal BBC Four ook nog ‘Bowie At The BBC’ tonen, een compilatie van archiefbeelden van Bowie op de BBC van zijn eerste tv-optreden in 1964 tot aan zijn dood in 2016. Op BBC Radio 2 zal ook nog de documentaire ‘Life On Mars’ van Martin Kemp te horen zijn.
